Another local recipient of the Excellence in Folk and Traditional Arts award was Lona Hymas-Smith, whose husband, Dennis Smith accepted the award on her behalf.
Hymas-Smith, who carved wildlife from wood, died earlier this year from injuries sustained after a bicycle accident.
“There was not a bird of a fish she could not carve,” read Idaho Commission on the Arts Chair Mark Hofflund from a nomination letter for Hymas-Smith.
Hofflund said the letters about Hymas-Smith described how she took on every challenge and pushed the boundaries of wood carving.
“If she was here she would love it,” her husband said at the ceremony. “Anybody who knew her knew that she was somebody special.
Dennis's Mother, Dwayne, Monica, Grandma, Grandpa and Russ were able to attend with Dennis.
