Elder Seth Vaughn Garner you have been called to serve....

Seth opened his mission call on November 14th.  We meet at Mom and Dad's house that evening to watch him open it.  Seth was very sweet, humble and tender.  It was so exciting to hear him read the letter. He has been called to serve in the California San Diego Mission, he reports to the M.T.C. on January 23rd.  We all could not be more excited for Seth and the people in San Diego.  We know he will touch many lives.  We are grateful to Seth and his sacrifice to serve, we know our family will be blessed for his efforts.  WE LOVE YOU SETH.  We are so excited for you!!

Looking official!!

It was hugs all around.  Eli cried for a good forty minutes.  He said he just felt really good inside but he was also going to miss Seth.  All the kids really know how much Seth love's each of them.  Seth is such a awesome uncle.

Governor's Awards in the Arts

Dennis accepts the Governor's Award for Excellence in Folk and Traditional Art in behalf of Lona,
September 27th 2012

Taken from the Magic Valley Times News:

Another local recipient of the Excellence in Folk and Traditional Arts award was Lona Hymas-Smith, whose husband, Dennis Smith accepted the award on her behalf.
Hymas-Smith, who carved wildlife from wood, died earlier this year from injuries sustained after a bicycle accident.
“There was not a bird of a fish she could not carve,” read Idaho Commission on the Arts Chair Mark Hofflund from a nomination letter for Hymas-Smith.
Hofflund said the letters about Hymas-Smith described how she took on every challenge and pushed the boundaries of wood carving.
“If she was here she would love it,” her husband said at the ceremony. “Anybody who knew her knew that she was somebody special.

Dennis's Mother, Dwayne, Monica, Grandma, Grandpa and Russ were able to attend with Dennis.

Congratulations to Zac!!

Zac graduated from Military Boot Camp in Missouri on August 22nd.

Taylor, Oliver and Hazel ~ Happy reunion after the graduation!!
It's been 12 weeks apart.
They got to spend from 1pm to 8pm after graduation and 8:30am to 8:30pm the next day together.
Then it's good by again for the next 4-1/2 months.

Zac sneaks a kiss before he has to head out to Texas for Basic Training.
(There isn't suppose to be any public affection while in uniform!)

Lined up and ready for a 22 hour bus ride to Texas for Basic Training.
He will finish January 10th.

Oliver's airport mode of transportation. Haha

Warning......not for the week at heart, graphic grossness!

And trauma lives on......

Just  thought everyone would like to see the latest mishaps in the Baird Family!

Lauri goes head to head
with a razor.
That dang boxing it up to
move process!
(Good thing she has a dad who makes
stitching house calls)

Scott drops a big metal carpet stripping machine on his foot snapping the end of the
bone off the big toe.

 It's totally GROSS!!
(Since this picture, the nail is now completely black matching his completely black fingernail from a run in with a saw a couple months ago.)

Dallen hiked the hills at night and met up with some poison oak. It's pretty much all over his body.

And..... Seth woke up with his head laying on his shoulder and the muscle on the side of his neck lumped up like a large goiter!!
(I didn't take a pic of that)
Turned out to be Torticollis, or wry neck.
We Garner's need a Dad Doc to make
house calls!
$$$

Thus life's traumas keep coming!!

Simon's blessing

We blessed Simon on June 27. We had to squeeze him into his 3 month size blessing outfit, but luckily it worked! Mitcheal gave a beautiful blessing and Simon held down the spit up for the whole two minutes! (that's quite the feat for him)

Simon's blessing

Hey family, sorry this is such short notice, but we wanted to let everyone know we are blessing Simon tomorrow. It is at 9 am and the church is on the corner of 300 north and 500 east in Logan. We are having a little brunch at our house right after sacrament meeting. We'd love to have any of you there, but we know it's way short notice so if you can't make it, no problem. Love you all!

Our Awesome Big Bro

Russ and the Iron Man

As unbelievable as it is to all of us who can't even imagine the possibility of going the distance of an iron man.......2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and a full 26 mile marathon run, RUSS SIGNED UP!!!

Saint George Iron Man May 5th 2012

Trying to train through tax season didn't give
him much time.
As soon as tax season ended he had about 2-1/2 weeks to crank some extra work outs.
Here he is doing some serious leg workouts at
Bear Lake on his mountain bike.

Happily ready to go!!

Results:

Off to a great start swimming, ten minutes later the weather threw a curse down and brought forth huge 4 to 6 foot waves not only sending many swimmers back to shore but capsizing the rescue boats!

After getting pummeled by wave after wave and swallowing water Russ thought, "You know, I pulled a guy out at a race that didn't make it", and so he joined the masses heading to shore.

Two hours later the race officials decided to let those who had to bail go ahead and go on to bike and run "un-officially", so Russ hopped on his bike
and headed out.

The Saint George Iron Man is touted as about the hardest because of all the hills. Well Russ went about  about 50 miles against the wind and conquered even the toughest hill they call "The Wall". Then, he said it was a major rush going down the other side at a speed of 50 miles an hour! CRAAAAAZZZY!!

He went a total of 70 miles and missed the cut off time to go on by 10 minutes.
He said all-in-all it was a great experience he would definitely like to do again.
GO-RUSS-GO
You make us proud!

Easter 2012

HAPPY EASTER!

SIS 1 AND SIS 2

Spring

A time when the Earth awakes and renews herself to a
beautiful and glorious state!

How appropriate is it that we spend this day in Spring thinking about and honoring the Resurrection.

Christ laid down his life for us then arose and was renewed to his glorious and perfect state.

What a beautiful day of remembrance it is.

How grateful we are for the atonement in our lives to know
that we can be made perfect and return to our Father in Heaven
where we will live as family together forever throughout all Eternity.

Our JOY will be unspeakable!!

On the heal of the loss of Lona, it is an extra tender time of observance for this incredible gift from Jesus Christ, knowing Lona is with not only our Father in Heaven but her Father and Mother.
Her joy if full!

Let's not have any empty chairs at our
Family table in Heaven!
I love all of you and want us all to be together!

Happy Easter to all my wonderful family!

HE IS RISEN!

Lona Linzy Hymas Smith

We say goodbye for now to our fun loving, talented, wonderful Aunt Lona,
Grandma Juanee Baird's youngest sister.
There are no words to fully say how we
feel about her loss.
She had a life filled with a special zest for nature, fun and loving those around her.
All of us will have a crevasse in our hearts
and our lives that will never be filled.
We will all miss her greatly!

Here is her obituary:

LONA HYMAS SMITH
April 14, 1961-March 9, 2012

BURLEY - Lona Hymas Smith, 50, of Burley, passed away Friday, March 9, 2012, from injuries sustained in a bicycle accident.
Lona was born April 14, 1961, in Burley, Idaho, the daughter of LaVern and Hazel (Linzy) Hymas. She graduated from Minico High School in 1979, then went on the attend Ricks College, where she studied art. Lona was lucky to marry her best friend, Dennis Smith, on May 5, 1994, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She met him up on the mountain at Pomerelle on a very stormy day when the weather forced skiers inside the lodge. She was a very cute ski instructor and Dennis was on ski patrol. They made their initial home in Burley, but early in their married life, they moved to a home on the Snake River because Lona loved the river, and because Dennis loved doing things to support and encourage Lona. He encouraged her to pursue her love of wood-carving, and she'd often ask his advice on pieces she was working on. Lona knew Dennis was her biggest fan, the reason she carved and the love of her life. Lona exuded a passion for life and the outdoors. She enjoyed swimming across the river and back to her home; exploring, hiking, skiing, bicycling, playing the banjo and all around adventuring.
Lona also enjoyed creating "illusionary realism" as she fondly tagged it, through her woodcarving. At 4 years old, she was drawing human forms. Later, she majored in sculpture at Ricks (BYU-Idaho), taking all the classes she could in human figure drawing and
3-D art. But it wasn't until 14 years after college that she discovered her rare talent in wild life art. Lona is one of only two recognized women bird carvers in Idaho, as well as the only woman fish carver. Her creativity, skill, dedication and love of her craft was beautifully displayed in her carvings, which were sold at the renowned Kneeland Gallery in Sun Valley, Idaho, and the Horizon Gallery in Jackson, Wyo. Private collectors recognized her incredible gift and commissioned her to do pieces for them. Her work was sought by numerous collectors for the exquisite attention to detail and the beauty of the pieces she crafted.
Lona's work has been publicly recognized through a number of honors and awards, including the prestigious Ward World Championship and placement in the University of Tulsa Gilcrease Museum collection. Although very humble and sincere by nature, Lona was so thrilled when her carving of the Stellar's Jay won the Advanced Level "Best in Division" for Decorative Life-size Wildfowl in the 2010 Ward World Championship Wildfowl Carving Competition and Art Festival in Ocean City, MD. This event is the top competition for world-class woodcarvers, and Lona's exceptional Stellar's Jay was a great representation of her skill. Lona gave of herself and her talent to bless the lives of others by donating art work to auctions benefitting wildlife and hunting organizations, a community cancer patient, and a bicycle accident individual to name a few.
Prior to carving full time, Lona held a variety of jobs throughout the community, working at the Wizard Sandwich shop and Jil's Flower House. She served as Dr. Blackmer's podiatric assistant, was a BLM dispatcher and a banjo, scuba and ski instructor.
Surviving are her husband, Dennis of Burley; siblings, Jaunee (Vaughn) Baird of Pleasant View, Utah, Vickie (Larry) Hathaway of Spanish Fork, Utah, Cherri (Clint) Peavey of Ketchikan, Alaska, Monica (Duane) Rasmussen of Burley, and a sister-in-law, Tannie Hymas of Eagle, Idaho. In her heart, Lona adopted her niece, Shana Mortensen, as the daughter she never had and loved her as her own. She is also survived by her mother-in-law, Carol Smith of Burley; one brother-in-law, Jeff (Coco) Smith of North Carolina; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, LaVern Charles and Hazel Marie Hymas; her brother, Steve Hymas, and her father-in-law, Rawlin (Butch) Smith.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 15, at the Star LDS Ward, 100 S. 200 W. of Burley. Burial will follow at the Pleasant View Cemetery. A viewing for family and friends will be held from 6 until 8 p.m.  Wednesday, March 14, at the Rasmussen Funeral Home, 1350 E. 16th St. in Burley, and from noon until 12:45 p.m. Thursday at the church.
"You were too young, too beautiful, too talented, to be taken away and how sad it is to lose such a lovely lady. We will always remember you and that smile. We have lost an amazing friend and artist in Lona Smith. She loved life and lived it to the fullest. You have left beauty here behind you in the legacy of your woodcarving and gifts of love that you sent into the lives of others. We are all better for you having been here. Lona, you were everything to us and more. You are our hero."
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to "Bikes for Kids" and dropped off at any D.L. Evans Branch or mailed to D. L. Evans Bank, 318 S. Oneida, Rupert, ID, 83350, with checks made payable to "Bikes for kids."

Birthday~Anniversary Trip~February 2012

Meet Jan, Uncle Dale's new wife.

Jan and Dale
"Can you be ready in 30 minutes?"

Uncle Dale decided to propose to Jan so he up and headed over to her place, knocked on the door and when she answered he said, "Will you marry me?", she answered "Yes". She asked him when and he said, "Can you be ready in 30 minutes?" Hahaha! She said she hadn't gotten ready for anything in 30 minutes! They hopped in the car and headed to Vegas where they came to their senses on the way and decided to turn around and wait to check on the tax ramification and let their kids know. The result......They waited till the first of January and now.......
